A Coronial inquest into the deaths of two teenagers in a car crash in the West Australian Wheatbelt in 2006 has heard there are questions over the way police investigated the incident.

Courtney Moloney and Scott Johnson, aged 16 and 17, were passengers in a car that hit a tree in the town of Quairading.

The 16-year-old learner driver was injured in the crash and later pleaded guilty to driving contrary to the conditions of his licence.

The lawyer representing the dead teenagers' families has told the inquiry he will be examining the standard of the police investigation.

He says he will also investigate whether the Road Traffic Act appropriately penalises learner drivers who break the law.

The hearing continues.
