Victorian police have confirmed a child's body found in a Melbourne creek this morning is that of Yadav Munohur, who has been missing for two weeks.

Gardiners Creek was swollen by rain on the night the nine-year-old disappeared.

Today, it was rain that led to the discovery of his body.

Sergeant Graham Rodgers says divers searched the same area where it was found two weeks ago.

"It may've been snagged, it may've been underwater for a period of time and with the recent rains it's just brought it to the surface," he said.

Yadav Munohur, who was an orphan in India, ran from his adoptive parents' home in Hawthorn to a local park, and could not be found despite a major search.

Two construction workers spotted his body in the creek this morning.

His body was formally identified by his parents this afternoon.

Victorian Premier John Brumby says his heart goes out to Yadav's family.

"It's just a tragedy, your heart just goes out to the family, it must be terrible for the parents and they know now what has happened to their child but it must be absolutely heartbreaking for them," he said.
