Russian withdrawal from Georgia still uncertain

By Philip Williams in Tbilisi

There are conflicting reports about the extent of any Russian troop withdrawal from occupied Georgia.

The Russian government had promised to pull back its forces by late Friday.

While there are reports of some troop movement it appears the bulk of the occupation forces are still in position.

It gives the Russian Army little time to complete a withdrawal if it is to meet the Friday deadline.

In Georgia's breakaway province of Abkhazia tens of thousands have rallied calling on Russia to recognise its independence.

Both the US and Georgian presidents have warned that Abkhazia and South Ossetia remain a non-negotiatble part of Georgia.
