Legal experiment, major issue in WA election

Western Australia's truth in sentencing laws were introduced five years ago to clarify an informal sentencing procedure where people would get about a third off their sentences for good behaviour in gaol. The laws have led to accusations that the judiciary is soft on crime. Both parties are promising to scrap the laws but until a new parliament is formed judges have to sentence people knowing the cases will most likely be reviewed.
